The Search for Something Special
Lauren and I were searching for something special, a vacation destination that felt different, something that could stir our souls in a way no other place had. We had already explored the turquoise waters of the Exumas, the charm of the Caymans, the lush landscapes of Jamaica, the vibrant cultures of Cozumel and Cancun, and even the magic of Antigua, where we exchanged our wedding vows. Each destination had left its mark on us, yet we knew there was something more—something we hadn't yet discovered.
(Twin Cove Beach - Eleuthera, Bahamas)
Discovering Eleuthera
We wanted an island that felt intimate, unspoiled, and free from the throngs of all-inclusive resorts where you rarely venture beyond the gates. A place that felt like it was waiting just for us to explore its hidden secrets. Then, as if by fate, we stumbled upon Eleuthera.
Even before setting foot on this Bahamian gem, we were enchanted by its untouched beauty. The endless stretch of pristine beaches, the impossibly clear waters—it was like a dream we couldn't wait to step into. Our journey was effortless, as we wanted a destination that didn’t require wasting precious time traveling. Eleuthera called to us, and we answered.
Our First Steps on Untouched Paradise
Our first trip to Eleuthera was an adventure that felt pure and raw. We rented a modest Airbnb on the island’s Atlantic side, but it was hardly more than a place to lay our heads. Every day was a new journey. We rented a car and explored the island from tip to tail, taking on each new day like explorers venturing into the unknown.
Exploring Eleuthera: Hidden Beaches and Secret Coves
We ventured down dusty roads that led us to deserted beaches, where the only footprints in the sand were our own. The aquamarine waters embraced us as we floated for hours, with not a soul in sight. We snorkeled to an island off Gaulding Cay, finding it as wild and untouched as the main island. We journeyed to the iconic Lighthouse Beach before it was claimed by Disney, and it felt like we had uncovered a treasure—its soft sands and crystal waters felt like paradise itself.
Falling in Love, Again and Again
Each day, we let the island guide us, moving from one hidden beach to another, always discovering something more beautiful than the last. We dined in charming local restaurants, tasting the flavors of the island and connecting with the locals who quickly became our guides to Eleuthera’s secrets. We explored nearby Harbour Island with its pink sand beaches and charming golf cart-filled streets—a vibrant contrast to Eleuthera's serene isolation.
Discovering the Charm of Spanish Wells
Lauren and I, usually drawn to new adventures, were amazed that Eleuthera had us returning. We expected that, like many other places, the magic might not be the same the second time around. But Eleuthera proved us wrong. On our second visit, we found even more to love. This time, we explored the peaceful fishing village of Spanish Wells, a picture-perfect island just northwest of Eleuthera. After a short ferry ride, we were greeted by overwater swings, friendly locals, and breathtaking beaches. The charm of Spanish Wells beckoned us to stay a night, soaking in the peacefulness of this community.
Adventures on the West Coast: Boating and Blue Holes
We found new beaches, explored blue holes, and rented a boat to glide along the west coast’s calm waters. The island revealed itself to us in ways we hadn’t imagined, offering secluded beaches where the only sound was the gentle lap of the waves against the shore. We anchored, swam, snorkeled, and indulged in a secluded picnic by the sea. It was a day of pure joy, untethered from the outside world. The beauty, the quiet, the sense of absolute peace—it was unforgettable.
Connecting with the Locals: Festivals and Flavors
One evening, we joined the locals for a festival, dining under the stars, dancing to island rhythms, and savoring the local fare. We felt more connected to this island than any other place we had been. It was during that trip we knew: Eleuthera wasn’t just a vacation spot for us anymore—it was a part of us. So, we took a leap of faith and put in an offer on a home in Rainbow Bay.
A New Chapter: Finding Our Home in Rainbow Bay
Our new home, nestled on the Atlantic side of one of the narrowest parts of the island, gives us a view of the vast ocean we adore. Just a mile away lies the beautiful Rainbow Bay beach, one of our absolute favorites. Its calm, shallow waters, vibrant marine life, and secluded charm make it the perfect place for our growing family. We love taking our children there, sharing with them the wonders of this place that has captured our hearts.
Sharing the Magic with Friends
Our third visit was nothing short of magical. This time, we brought friends to show them the Eleuthera we had fallen for. We stayed on Windermere Island, a private enclave accessed by a small bridge. We introduced our friends to the island’s secrets—new beaches, boat rides where we encountered dolphins and sea turtles, and even a private chef who created an unforgettable dining experience for us. The island, ever generous, revealed new facets of itself with every visit.
Why We Keep Coming Back to Eleuthera
Lauren and I have now visited Eleuthera five times, and yet, there is still so much more to discover. From our centrally located home in Rainbow Bay, the island is ours to explore—from its southernmost beaches to the northern cays. While we aren’t golfers, the island is developing in exciting ways, with new golf courses taking shape. Yet, despite its growth, Eleuthera retains its soul—a wild, beautiful, and welcoming place that feels like it belongs only to those who truly appreciate its magic.
Eleuthera: A Place to Live, Love, and Explore
With every visit, we are reminded why we fell in love with this island. It’s the untouched beaches, the crystalline waters, the blue holes, and the abundance of marine life. But it’s also the people, the community, and the feeling of freedom that Eleuthera gives us. It’s a place that allows us to slow down, to savor life, to explore, and to truly live. Eleuthera, with its heart wide open, continues to surprise and captivate us. It’s a place that makes us feel more alive, more connected, and more in love—with the island, and with each other.
